Carrying on with the art test for the meet mat competition, the session started off with some feedback on our “Meet Mat”. Which I got some decent feedback as no one on art station has done a Vault Boy character which is a surprise for me when I originally came up with the idea that no one else has done it. With this feedback I got given a cool idea for my vault boy idea is to turn his face into a pip boy screen. This is a tempting idea however I will put it to one side and maybe attempt it if I have enough time at the end. As I like the idea of replacing the face with a screen from the pip boy however most of the meet mats I have seen on art station have a screen for the face.
With the feedback done I carried on with the character which I soon came across a problem. IS that I had been using the old mesh from the past competition which is already on the substance painter. Luckily I checked if I was using the right one as the new one is slightly different with an improved mesh. This is still an issue as I have to either bake the material or start from new. Which I went for making a new one as it will allow me to correct my mistakes on my current one. Also it allows me to get use to using Substance painter with the tools and techniques. With the tools I learnt some new ones that will definitely help me in the future as I found out about the lazy mouse tool that makes my lines more curvy and smooth when drawing. This is ideal for my character due its cartoon style which improved my drawing of the characters facial features.
Another set of tools I learnt was the transform tool as when I drew my characters face it was to close to the top. To solve this I researched into tools to solve this which I for the transform tool that allows me to move the layers details solving my problem. As i was not up for redrawing the face again. Also another
Overall this session did set me back a bit however it was needed as my first attempt wasn’t the best. So starting from scratch again has definitely improved the quality of my character. As I have improved on my texturing with making it neater with the lines and facial features. Which was one of my issue with trying to recreate the iconic vault boy face.
In my spare time before the hand in for the competition I played around with improving the texturing by sorting out the head. By improving the hair and facial features. I even added some wear and tear by adding scratch marks and finger prints. Which have turned out alright but need tweaking in the setting. I even played around with the render settings
