Indie Game: Level Design

With making the block mesh for my level I found it to be alright as it allows me to start working out how I want to design my level from the way I want the player to move through the level but also how I could make my game prototype interesting for the player. With blocking out my level I started off in Maya just so that I can play around with the design and layout of my lab level. The idea for my block mesh is to block out the rooms from a starting room to a couple of rooms each with a task. In my mind I would have the whole level as one asset. So, with this in mind I have already worked out the scale by re scaling the grid but also made a cube reference to the scale of the player. Just so that I can get an idea of size comparison and if they could fit through the door way. With a basic begin section, I thought I would be a good idea to see if the player could walk into and through it. However, when importing it over to unreal I soon realized I have a couple of problems with it such as not being able to go into it and that inside it is see through.

So, with these problems I tried to solve them one by one, so I tried to solve the issue with the interior being see through. So, I went back into Maya and changed the face direction to inwards which sort of worked as you can see the interior but from the outside you can’t see the walls. So, I then went for a simple method of just extruding the thickness  of the walls from a plain. This works but the outside of it looks a bit distorted which doesn’t really matter. However, it does make me question my method of having the hole level as one as really, I could cut it up to sections making it more manageable. This made me  question my method of level design as what other methods I could use to be more effective with creating my level that can save me time. From this thought I looked up some tutorials to see what methods I could use for my level design.

From the research I found this tutorial on creating a corridor which proved to be rather useful in giving me an insight to how I could do my level for my game.
