Indie Game: Level Design Re-work

With researching into Mario level designs I decided to rework my games level as I felt like it didn’t really have a tutorial segment in the level where the player could play around with the controls, double jump ability and other mechanics. So from the research of the videos on Nintendo’s Mario levels I took in some inspiration from their level design such as merging the tutorial with the actual game level.Without the player knowing they are doing a tutorial. As I find tutorials are a hit or miss with enjoying them as they can be so boring with going through all the controls and abilities. So I want my tutorial to be built into the actual level so that the player doesn’t know they are doing a tutorial. As I find that tutorials work best when they are built into the level making it fit in with the game. So for starters I have rearranged the first level into two sections a tutorial platform section and an actual platform section that is challenging.

Looking back on this session of work I feel like I am get some where with my level design. As before I couldn’t make my mind up with my level level design as I tried to make a 2D layout in Photoshop which I ended up looking to simple and that I couldn’t make my mind up with what each section of the level should be. But now with a rough idea of how to lay out a level for my game I can start to be more confident with making the level sections.
