Indie Game: Rough Idea for Level Design

When it came to designing my level for my game I started to think how I could create my level and what I should include in it. As I only have a basic idea of the design for my level as so far, it’s going to be mainly based on rooms that have tasks for the player to complete so that they can progress to the next room. So, my whole game level design is going to be mainly based on rooms connecting to each other. So, it’s very basic with the level design for my game. So, with the way I am going with designing my level is a basic 2D map of the level just so that I can get a basic idea of how I could layout the level. I have already tried to make a block mesh map of the level in Maya which turned out alright, but I had an issue with trying to import it over to Unreal. But also, I was still unsure of the level design, so I am best to make a basic map of the level to see where I could go from there.

So, with making my 2D level design I am using Photoshop to create a very basic map so that I can plan out my games level. As it will allow me to work out what the rooms have in the means of tasks. Which so far, I am going to have the starting room with minimal objects in expect a key card just, so the player can get an idea of what they are searching for to progress to the next room. But also, the starting room can be used for the player to get use to the controls and the abilities that are available to them. Moving onto the second room it will be mainly based on parkour where the player traverses the platforms to collect the rooms key card to progress to the next room.

In the end with creating a 2D level design I ended up giving up on this as I am still unsure if this is going to be useful to me as I am still working on coming up with a level that I am happy with. At least I gave this method a go but it feels so basic which makes me think that I am wasting my time with this when I could do a block mesh level.
