With this week’s Maya workshop session, we got to work on UV mapping in more detail. As last week’s session we learnt the basics tools and methods of UV mapping. So, we have been tasked with UV mapping a Sony Walkman stereo and texturing it. With UV mapping the Walkman it was alright as I understand how it works in the way of unfolding it, but I did have some issues with unfolding it. As with the unfolding tool the asset sometimes just doesn’t look right. Luckily, I easily solve that by adding extra cuts to the corner edges allowing it to unfold properly instead of a screwed-up UV net of the asset. After this set back I encountered I checked my UV map of the Walkman and fixed any issues that I came across. Luckily there wasn’t too much to fix, with the UV map complete I checked it over to see if there were any distortions of the chequered texture. With the main features of the Walkman UV mapping complete I wanted to push myself. So, I done more UV mapping on other parts of the Walkman such as the internals which I really didn’t need to do but it allows me to practice and improve upon UV mapping.
With the UV map done I rearranged them into the UV graph section trying to fit in all the UV sections which wasn’t too difficult and made it easier to understand the layout of the Walkman and being efficient with the space given. With this done I then moved onto texturing the Walkman which I downloaded the UV map and imported it into photo shop where I applied the textures which I went with the red and black style. With texturing I added in the logos, text and even the play and pause buttons.
Looking back on this session I think that I went rather well with the UV mapping however I do feel like I could have added more to the texturing of the Walkman such as more detail with printed texted and more symbols. But apart from that I felt like this sessions work went rather well and with this knowledge of UV mapping and texturing I can put this to use in future work and even some of my own projects to improve upon my 3D asset skills
