Research task: Communication

With video games they have many ways in which they can communicate with the player in many ways in directing the player to what tasks they need to complete. One in game a good example that has a strong way of communication is that in Fallout 4 they have iconic looking storage items which gives the player an idea of what each container should contain such as ammo tins contain ammo and when you are completing a certain area there an end of dungeon chest which is a red steamer chest. This makes it easy for the player to look for these iconic containers. The way of communication is a signifier as it signifies an indicator that this item is interactable and contains items related to its design. Making it a perceivable to the player that they need to look out for this item making it a very effective way of communication. The affordances for this is that the containers can hold items that can help improve your gameplay making it a bit easier and more enjoyable.

Another way I found a video game that has shown a strong way to communicate with the player is in the halo franchise such as halo reach there are checkpoint markers that are clearly displayed to make it easy for them to get an idea of where they need to head next and their tasks they need to complete. Which I’ve found many other games don’t do this correctly from being too simple or to complicated. Which with this method is and isn’t effective depending on how you display it.
